   searched for bioluminescent algae mechanisms online

   "Looking for a fresh glow thread to break the flat night"

   read about glowing mushrooms and wondered why they light up

   "Glowing mushrooms sound like a night forest scene, makes me wonder why they light up."

   answered a payphone that slammed shut with a muttered 'not now'

   "A man slammed the payphone receiver down as he muttered 'not now' and walked away."

   stood in the museum clock room, watching a still pendulum

   "I stood a long time in front of the clock room, the pendulum that paused yesterday hung still."

   fed a coin in the casino and broke even

   "I fed another coin into the slot and the display flickered, showing my balance at zero, meaning I’d finally broken even."
